Roof slating can be an art into itself. Slate can be installed in many ways, some of which are highly creative. Slates are usually more time consuming to fix than tiles. The most basic installation is a “standard” slate installation.

The main players in the roof tile market are Marley, Redland and Sandsoft. Marley started making roof tiles in 1924 and Redland in 1919, both are still going strong with a huge range of tiles and slates. Different types of tile vary hugely in size with the small clay, or concrete “Plain tiles” at only 265 x 165mm compared to the largest of roofing slates at a giant 600 x 300mm. The benefits of a lead roof include a longer life span (compared to using other roofing materials), complying with listed building regulations and a neat and tidy, unobtrusive appearance.
LEAD FLASHING
When any part of a roof meets a vertical surface or abutment as with an extension, Lead is usually used for this roof window or a dividing wall between two terraced properties, the joint between the vertical surface and the roof covering needs to be sealed against leaks.
Lead is used because it is a very durable material which has the ability to expand and contract with varying temperatures. This is essential on a roof which is quite obviously open to all elements.

There is a growing interest amongst architects, developers, councils and self-builders in the use of timber for cladding; not only for domestic construction but also for much larger and more prestigious buildings. A prime reason for this interest is recognition of the green and the qualities of timber as a building material.
Timber cladding is a dry process which not only reduces construction time and we can also offer cladding which is made up into prefabricated panels, further reducing construction time on site. The renewed interest in using wood to clad timber buildings has also extended to the use of wood to clad block-work, concrete or steel framed buildings. Although usually chosen for visual reasons and used as a rain screen, to the wall behind, there is an additional advantage in that it allows extra insulation to be located outside a masonry wall behind the boarding. This insulation may provide the full thermal performance of the building or contribute to improving the insulation of existing buildings. |

One of the major advantages of metal roof sheeting is that, in most of its forms, it is light weight, and therefore portable. Metal roofs are used almost universally to cover buildings because of their high strength to weight ratio. Painted metal roofs are usually snow-shedding. Snow can usually collect when it is fresh and lighter weight. As soon as the ambient temperature rises a couple degrees, the snow usually just slides off. FELT SYSTEMS

Built up roofing felt is a composite of an absorbent sheet of organic or synthetic fiber that is impregnated/saturated and coated with a waterproofing agent such as tar or asphalt bitumen that prevents ingress of moisture.
Built up felt roofs consist of two or three layers of sheet felt materials that form a dense and impermeable barrier. The felt roof system is built up of multiple layers of high performance felts and mastic asphalt over an insulated timber or concrete flat roof deck. There are several techniques for applying built up felt - depending on the materials used. |
